EGYPT: Opposition leader demands more than resignations

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei dismissed the resignations of members of President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling party Saturday as only another in a series of small reforms that fall short of the regime change protesters have demanded.

ElBaradei told CNN that Mubarak, 82, has shown no signs that he understands the Egyptian people want a complete overhaul of the government.

“It’s about democracy,“ said ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace laureate whose National Assn. for Change coalition wants to see an immediate change in the country’s leadership. ElBaradei has also said that he is willing to run for president if called upon.

‘I’m ready to engage when we believe that Mr. Mubarak is ready to step down,’ he told CNN on Saturday. “We do not want to be part of a ploy.’ — Molly Hennessy-Fiske
