Ferris Bueller drives a Honda CR-V in Super Bowl ad

This commercial for Honda’s CR-V is a pitch-perfect homage to the beloved slacker movie “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ and could easily become one of the most talked about Super Bowl commercials Sunday.

It stars an in-on-the-joke Matthew Broderick. The ad was teased with a short trailer and then an extended cut a week before the big game. Todd Phillips (“The Hangover”) directed the spot, winking at the classic ‘80s flick without entirely co-opting it.

The creative types at RPA, a Santa Monica ad agency, have said their goal was to put out the message that the Honda CR-V is more than transportation from point A to point B. It’s a car that can help you enjoy life.

Broderick speaks directly to the camera, fakes being sick, wears a towel turban and joyrides instead of working. He does not, however, run up against his old principal foe or any other characters from the coming-of-age comedy.

No one’s confusing a Honda CR-V with a Ferrari 250GT California, but the ad works.
