David Beckham remains unlikely starter for Galaxy on Saturday

Galaxy midfielder David Beckham’s health status remains a day-to-day concern for the Galaxy. For a few weeks, Beckham has struggled with what he described as a “slight stress fracture to the spine.” He came off the bench for the final 25 minutes in last weekend’s draw with the Seattle Sounders, and by the sound of it, a similar appearance is the most Galaxy fans can hope for Saturday against the Chicago Fire.

“It’s a major concern at times when you get back injuries, but obviously I don’t have to get surgery,” Beckham said after Thursday’s practice. “That is the lucky part of it, but I have to be careful. If I continue to push it when it’s not right, then surgery will be out there.”

Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena remained vague about the chances of Beckham playing Saturday, though his answers echoed those he gave last week to the same questions.

“David’s going to take some time to come back from his issues,” Arena said. “We’ll see what he’s like [Friday] and then make a decision on that.”

Defender A.J. DeLaGarza will likely join Beckham on the bench Saturday. DeLaGarza suffered a boot to the face against the Sounders and left the game with concussion-like symptoms. Arena said the Galaxy do not think DeLaGarza suffered a concussion.

“He’s making progress,” Arena said. “It’s a day-to-day thing. It’s possible’ he’ll play Saturday.

Also injured against the Sounders, defender Omar Gonzalez will be ready to go against the Fire.
