Was anyone surprised La Canada’s John Geyer took his third consecutive Division II boys’ diving title on Tuesday? Well, they shouldn’t be since it was obvious from his first dive Tuesday that Geyer is one of the most gifted board jumpers to ever come out of the Southland.
Despite having what he merely described as an ‘OK day’ out at the Westlake HS pool, Geyer amassed 592.60 points to win the title -- nearly 100 points better than second-place finisher David Corless of Crescenta Valley. His outstanding performance not only gave the Spartans a much-needed boost to complete with Hart and CV for the Division II boys swimming title, but it also proved Geyer has to be considered the favorite to win the Masters’ Meet title in a couple of weeks.
Corless (495.30) and Brandon Liu of La Canada rounded out the top three -- just like last year.
Here’s one of Geyer’s championship-winning dives:
I also interviewed Geyer following his championship victory and I’ll post the video once it uploads. Until then, here’s what La Canada Coach Art Lopez had to say about Geyer’s big day:
