Boys’ basketball: Mater Dei loses in championship game

Santa Ana Mater Dei (7-1) suffered its first defeat Saturday night, losing in Washington D.C. to the home school, Gonzaga Prep, 62-59, in the championship game of the Gonzaga DC Classic.
Gary Franklin Jr. scored 24 points and Tyler Lamb 16 for the Monarchs, who couldn’t hold on to an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter.
In fact, Mater Dei led by as many as 12 points in the second half.
