Baseball: JSerra advances to tourney final

San Juan Capistrano JSerra (4-0) earned a spot in the championship game of the Newport Elks tournament with a 6-4 victory over Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley. Tyler Krause hit a three-run home run and Nico Darras singled in Grant Davis to put the Lions ahead, 5-4.

Palm Desert (3-1) handed Santa Ana Mater Dei its first defeat, 6-4. Brooks Kriske struck out six in six innings. Jonathan Serven went three for three. Cody Kabeary had two hits and two RBIs. Dave Schucknecht and Kaz Halcovich each hit home runs for Palm Desert.

Matt Lathuras struck out 10 to help Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (3-0) defeat Westchester, 3-1.

La Puente Bishop Amat is showing signs of life after wins over Orange Lutheran and Mission Viejo. The Lancers beat Mission Viejo, 3-2, with Ryan Serrato getting the game-winning RBI and Rio Ruiz going two for two. Bishop Amat plays Chatsworth on Monday night at USC.

Mike Hymes went three for three and Ramsey Abushahia hit a grand slam to help Woodland Hills Taft (3-0) defeat Sun Valley Poly, 13-1. Hymes is seven for eight on the season and has reached base in 12 of his 13 at-bats. All-City catcher Jordan Berger, getting a chance to pitch, allowed three hits in five innings.

Newbury Park (3-0) defeated San Fernando, 2-1, in a pitcher’s duel between Danny Keller and David Lira. Keller struck out seven in five innings. Luke Eubank got the save with three strikeouts in two innings. Sylmar defeated Palmdale Highland, 11-1.

Sophomore Nick Suniga struck out six in six innings and Max Fried hit a two-run home run while also picking up the save to lead Van Nuys Montclair Prep past Palisades, 6-4.

Santa Clarita Golden Valley defeated Eastside, 13-6, with Billy Fredrick getting three hits and four RBIs.

Verdugo Hills defeated Palmdale Knight, 6-2. Campbell Hall defeated Granada Hills, 6-3. Jack Bensinger threw a complete game.
