More than 1,000 people showed up to apply for about 425 jobs at the Torrance Marriot Hotel, which opens Feb. 20. Hotel spokesman Jeff Loo said the hotel expects up to 5,000 people to apply for the jobs, which range from dishwasher to reservation clerk, by Jan. 25, when hiring will end. “I’m so desperate I’ll take anything--whatever they’ve got,” said Elaine Witty, 22, of Torrance, who was standing in line with her 3-year-old daughter, Shanel Wilson. “I’ve been here about an hour and I’m prepared to wait as long as it takes.” Witty, who has just moved to California from Toledo, Ohio, said she hopes the job will enable her to start training as a licensed practical nurse.
