A 28-year-old Poway man was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by an Amtrak passenger train traveling about 80 m.p.h., a county Sheriff’s Department homicide investigator said. Allen Byron Holbrook Jr. was sitting on the railroad tracks at 1st and J streets in Encinitas when he was struck and killed instantly by the northbound train, Sgt. Rick Figueroa said. The train’s conductor blew several warning blasts of his whistle and was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident, Figueroa said.
