MIAMI — The Inter American Press Association said Monday it has called upon Chilean President Augusto Pinochet to end the state of siege and lift restrictions imposed on the press in his nation.
In a statement issued in Miami, the press group said the Chilean government has “brought under control what remained of an independent and opposition press and radio stations. Most Chileans today can read, see and hear only what the regime approves.”
The group called on Pinochet to allow the 90-day state of siege to expire as scheduled Feb. 4.
