A former Libyan ambassador to Austria was shot and critically wounded as he left his home in Vienna, police said. Ezzeddin Ghadamsi, 45, was hit by five bullets before he could open a front garden gate, they said. He later underwent surgery at Wilhelminen Hospital. Police questioned witnesses who reported seeing an automobile drive by at the time of the shooting, but no suspect was in custody. Ghadamsi, ambassador from 1971 to 1980, was described as an opponent of Libyan leader Moammar Kadafi.
