2 Bangladesh Opposition Chiefs Under House Arrest

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Two main opposition leaders of this South Asian nation were under house arrest Sunday as part of President Hussain Mohammed Ershad’s ban on political activity and resumption of martial law.
Police cordoned off the homes of Hasina Wazed, daughter of the assassinated Sheik Mujibur Rahman, founder of the nation, who leads one branch of his Awami League, and Khaleda Zia, head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and widow of another assassinated chief of state, Ziaur Rahman.
All visitors, including relatives, have been turned backed from their homes, witnesses said.
Most opposition leaders have gone into hiding.
A five-hour night curfew remained in effect in the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere.
