SAN SALVADOR — Suspected guerrillas assassinated El Salvador’s army spokesman as he played tennis in the capital today and the killers left a red banner by his body, a presidential palace spokesman said.
Lt. Col. Ricardo Aristides Cienfuegos was cut down in a hail of gunfire at a sports club. The assassination came amid indications that left-wing guerrillas fighting the U.S.-backed army here intend stepping up urban operations after concentrating for some time on waging warfare in the countryside.
