New Zealand Opposition Sets U.S. Visit

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — The leader of the opposition National Party said Friday that he will tour the United States and Britain to explain that many New Zealanders do not support the government’s anti-nuclear policy.

“I think I’ve got every right to visit and let Americans know that there are hundreds and thousands of New Zealanders who . . . value their association with the United States,” party leader Jim McLay said.

“When he (Prime Minister David Lange) told Americans that bringing their ships to New Zealand was like bringing their lunch in a Kenworth truck, it must have had virtually every American who heard it on their breakfast television program choking on their cornflakes, and I wouldn’t blame them,” McLay said, adding that his trip is scheduled for July.
