The state Parks and Recreation Department has granted the City of San Gabriel $269,000 to enlarge the pool at Smith Park and improve the pool’s decking, water filtration system and locker and shower facilities. George E. Kotchnik, city parks and recreation director, said an architect will be hired soon so that construction can begin by September. San Gabriel High School uses the pool from January to May and the city runs recreation programs during the summer. The pool was built in 1952, Kotchnik said, and is in need of major improvements. The state grant comes from a park bond issue approved by voters last June.
