Community fund-raising efforts to bring former narcotics officer David Toma to high schools in the Norwalk-Mirada Unified School District have reached the $13,000 mark, district officials said.
Toma, whose exploits on the Newark, N.J., police force inspired the television series “Toma” and “Baretta,” recently lectured students on drug abuse at Norwalk and John Glenn high schools. He is scheduled to speak at El Camino High School, a continuation school, June 3, and at La Mirada High School on June 4 and 5.
The Parent-Teachers Assn. Grass Roots Alcohol and Drug Education committee, which is coordinating the fund raising, has set a goal of $20,000 by the end of May to pay Toma’s fees and expenses. On his school visits, Toma addresses the student body, talks to individual students with drug problems and meets with parents in an evening session.
