RAMSTEIN, West Germany — Two U.S. Air Force jets Tuesday smashed into runway landing lights, causing one to crash, a U.S. spokesman said.
The spokesman said the two F-4E Phantoms of the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing hit the lights early Tuesday as they made a “two-ship formation” approach to the Spangdahlem Air Base, 60 miles southwest of Cologne.
The crew of one plane ejected before it crashed to the ground and the other jet managed to land safely at nearby Bitburg Air Base with only minor damage, he said.
