Sparks Start L.A. Port Blast, Fire

Sparks from welders’ torches apparently touched off an explosion and fire today inside a toxic liquid chemical tank at the Port of Los Angeles, authorities reported.
It took 50 city firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the 8:39 a.m. blaze at Marine Terminal Co. in the port’s East Basin. No injuries were reported. A damage estimate was not available. The tank contained the industrial solvent trichloroethylene
