Fugitive Wanted on L.A. Indictment Captured in Britain

An Austrian national who had been sought since his 1981 indictment in Los Angeles on federal charges of exporting American high-technology equipment to the Soviet Union has been apprehended in Great Britain, the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday.
Dietmar Ulrichshofer, 44, indicted with three others in Los Angeles federal court on 60 counts of violating the Export Administration Act, the Arms Export and Control Act and federal income tax laws, was arrested Wednesday when he allegedly tried to enter Britain without a valid passport, authorities said.
Justice Department spokesman John Russell said extradition proceedings have already begun.
Ulrichshofer, West German businessman Werner J. Bruchhausen, Redondo Beach engineer Anatoly Maluta and Sabina Dorn Tittel of Rancho Palos Verdes were accused of having conspired to ship electronic communications systems, computer components and similar items to Europe with the knowledge that they would be transshiped to Russia.
Maluta and Tittel were both convicted and sentenced to prison terms. Bruchhausen is believed to be in West Germany, according to Russell.
