Detective Gary Cummings said the case deflected a .22-caliber bullet fired at point-blank range at Officer Cheryl Cline as she questioned a young man for loitering at a construction site. Cummings said the youth fired the automatic pistol, which apparently was concealed in his wallet pocket, so close to the officer that it left powder burns on her uniform.
