Southern Section Tennis : Corona del Mar Wins Handily

Corona del Mar High School, led by No. 1 singles player Mike Briggs, defeated Huntington Beach Friday, 19 1/2-8 1/2, in a second-round match of the boys’ 4-A Southern Section tennis playoffs at Huntington Beach.
Briggs swept all four sets he played by scores of 6-0 as the Sea Kings improved their record to 18-4.
In other 4-A action:
University 18 1/2, Foothill 9 1/2--No. 1 player George Paulson took three of his four matches to lead the Trojans to the quarterfinals. The Trojan doubles teams of Mike Hirt and Paul Corkery and John Pinches and Carsten Hoffman also won three of four matches.
In 3-A action:
Mission Viejo 17, La Quinta 11--The Diablos’ No. 1 singles player and Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams combined to score 11 of Mission Viejo’s 17 points. Sophomore Brad Mosley swept his sets at No. 1 singles while the No. 1 doubles team of Gary Pearne and Jeff Crider and No. 2 doubles Mike Bryce and Jeff Higashi each won three of four sets.
In 2-A action:
Valencia 25, Burroughs (Ridgecrest) 3--The host Tigers, led by the doubles team of Greg Nations and Carl Flynt, routed the Burros.
Nations and Flynt swept all four sets, as did No. 1 singles player Jimmy Fox.
