Michael Pringle will get his last shot at a long jump title tonight at the City track and field championships at Birmingham High.
Pringle, the Kennedy senior, has finished third in the long jump the last two years and is the favorite today. He also will run in the 100 meters and 200 meters, and will anchor the 400-meter relay team.
The girls long jump also features a favorite from the Valley. Kelly Peacock of Van Nuys is expected to win, and she is a contender in the 300-meter low hurdles, the 100 meters and 100-meter low hurdles.
Field events get under way at 5:30 p.m. The running events are scheduled for 6 p.m. The top four finishers in each event qualify for the state meet to be held next Friday and Saturday in Sacramento.
BASEBALL
They’ve used two methods, and both have been effective.
Sometimes they beat you with pitching and defense. Other times, it’s bombs away with the bats.
Whichever the case, Camarillo generally comes away the winner.
The Scorpions (20-7) won the Marmonte League, and they’ve easily advanced past their first two playoff opponents. The road to a Southern Section 4-A title gets significantly tougher today, however, when Camarillo plays host to Redondo Beach.
Bay League champion Redondo Beach (22-6-1) is seeded third in the division. The Seahawks reached the quarterfinals with a 13-12 win over Empire League champion Esperanza.
The other Valley-area baseball team still alive in the Southern Section playoffs is Montclair Prep. The Mounties (18-7) defeated St. Anthony, 6-5, in extra innings on Tuesday.
Montclair Prep plays host today to No. 1-ranked Whittier Christian. The Heralds (18-2) beat Royal Oak, 9-0, on Tuesday.
Both games begin at 3:15 p.m.
SOFTBALL
