Lucky Shirt Helps Him Win $100,000

Don’t be surprised if the next time you visit Hollywood Park there is a sea of Hawaiian print shirts.

The fashion trailblazer is 57-year-old Tony Alfaro, a retired contractor from Chino, who cracked the vault at Hollywood Park Sunday for $100,000 in the track’s handicapping contest, picking the winners of races one through eight. He missed a chance at $1 million in the ninth race on the card when his selection, Branta, finished fourth.

In addition, Alfaro picked up another $1,249.20, picking five of six winners in the Perfect Six.

“Everytime I wear this I win,” said Alfaro of his Jack Lord look-alike model shirt which was dominated by a series of blue pineapples. “My wife bought it for me in Hawaii several years ago and I always have good luck.”

The day could have been bigger for Alfano, who once hit Santa Anita for $17,000, but he was talked out of Happy Hope, the winner of the second race, on his Perfect Six card. That change of mind cost him nearly $100,000,
