“China Off the Beaten Track” is not the only guidebook available for those planning unescorted travel in China (Martha Freeman’s article, June 9). There is also the larger, more comprehensive and more current “China--A Travel Survival Kit” published by Lonely Planet (Box 2001A, Berkeley, Calif. 94702), priced at $14.95. Lonely Planet also publishes “Hong Kong, Macau & Canton,” $6.95, useful to independent travelers, as most enter China through Hong Kong.
