Letters to The Times : Extra Nickels
With the increase of the Rapid Transit District’s basic bus fare to 85 cents, and the cost of a transfer at 10 cents, I’ve noted that most riders do not carry 95 cents in exact change in their pockets.
To remedy this, they stuff a wadded-up dollar bill in the fare box, for which they are allowed to ride and given a transfer, with no complaints from the driver.
My question is--what happens to all those extra nickels?
