Tennis Roundup : Lendl Scores an Easy Victory in Clay Court Championships

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia needed slightly more than an hour to win his first match in the $575,000 U.S. Open Clay Court Championships Wednesday at Indianapolis, defeating Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, 6-4, 6-0.

Earlier, fourth-seeded Yannick Noah easily defeated close friend Thierry Tulasne of France, 6-3, 6-4, while two-time champion Jose Luis Clerc of Argentina and American Aaron Krickstein got an early exit.

Krickstein, the top-seeded American in the men’s bracket, lost to Jaro Navratil of Czechoslovakia, 3-6, 6-0, 7-5, while Clerc, seeded seventh, fell to West German Hans Schwaier, 6-3, 6-2.

Defending champion Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, the top-seeded woman, and No. 2 Zina Garrison both needed three sets to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, seeded third, mastered No. 12 Susan Mascarin, 6-3, 6-2.

Maleeva downed Sabrina Goles, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, while Garrison ousted Jenny Klitch, 6-1, 2-6, 8-6.

Andrea Jaeger ended a long layoff by posting a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Peggy Pauli in the first round of the State of New Jersey Ladies Cup at Livingston, N.J.

Unheralded Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands upset top-seeded Henrik Sundstrom of Sweden, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of the $70,000 Dutch Open championship at Hilversum, the Netherlands.
