MOSCOW — Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev will pay a friendly visit to Bulgaria later this month, the official news agency Tass said.
East European sources said the announcement means that Gorbachev will stay on in Bulgaria after a Warsaw Pact summit, which they said will begin next week.
The Sofia meeting, which will be attended by party leaders and prime ministers of the seven-nation military bloc, will give Gorbachev the opportunity to confer with his allies ahead of his Nov. 19-20 summit with President Reagan.
The date for the Sofia meeting has not been announced, but the sources said it is likely to begin Oct. 23.
