PREP FOOTBALL : Friday’s Highlights : No. 2 Fontana Is Beaten by San Gorgonio, 21-16

Fontana, The Times’ No. 2-ranked Southern Section team, fell behind, 21-0, in the third quarter Friday night and was never able to catch up, losing to San Gorgonio, 21-16, in a Citrus Belt League game at San Gorgonio.

The winning Spartans scored on an 80-yard run by quarterback Tony Kounas, a 33-yard jaunt by running back Joe Abreau and a fumble recovery by Chuck Robinson in the end zone.

Kounas gained 111 yards in 11 carries, and Abreau rushed for 80 yards in 16 carries.

Fontana quarterback Barry Titus completed 13 of 25 passes for 161 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked four times.

Fontana is 5-2 overall, including one forfeit loss, and 3-1 in the league. San Gorgonio is 5-2 and 3-1.

The Spartans’ only league loss was a 21-20 defeat by Riverside Poly, the Citrus Belt League leader at 4-0.

City

Bell 21, Jefferson 6--Lino Ramirez ran for touchdowns of 24 and 3 yards, and Eliud Pacheco threw a touchdown pass of 50 yards to give Bell (6-0 and 2-0) the victory in the Eastern League game involving two undefeated teams. Visiting Jefferson fell to 5-1 and 1-1. Bell led, 7-6, at halftime when Ramirez scored on a 24-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Eagles put the game away when Pacheco hit Sal Garcia on the 50-yard touchdown pass play in the fourth quarter.

Fairfax 28, Washington 0--Fullback La’Trelle Barnes rushed for 85 yards in 14 carries and three short touchdowns as the Lions (6-0 overall, 2-0 in league) continued to roll with a Crosstown League win at Fairfax. Tailback Michael Hale added 56 yards in 11 carries and a 3-yard touchdown run, giving him 851 yards and 14 touchdowns for the year. Washington (3-3, 1-1), expected to be Fairfax’s strongest competition in the Crosstown League, could manage only seven first downs, four of which came on penalties.

Dorsey 12, Gardena 7--Running back Tommy Jackson scored on runs of 3 and 17 yards to give The Times’ No. 4-ranked team a win over No. 5-rated Gardena in the Pacific League game at Gardena. The Dons scored first on John Frazier’s 34-yard run. Dorsey is now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league. Gardena is 3-3 and 2-0.

Southern Section

Los Altos 7, HH Wilson 0--Los Altos drove 57 yards in 11 plays in the third quarter and scored on Garo Sirinian’s 10-yard touchdown run up the middle for the only score in the Sierra League game at Los Altos High. HH Wilson controlled the first half, driving 64 yards in 14 plays to an apparent score, but had the touchdown called back for having five players in the backfield. On fourth and goal from the eight-yard line on the same drive, Brian Chavez’s lateral was fumbled by Mike Smith and recovered by Los Altos’ Paul Wiederkehr on the 16. The win improved Los Altos to 2-0 in league and 6-1 overall. In its six wins, Los Altos has recorded four shutouts and given up just 14 points. Its only loss was to Bishop Amat, 33-6, in the second game of the season. HH Wilson is now 1-6 and 0-2.

Loyola 17, Crespi 6--The Celts took a brief 6-0 lead on Jon Budge’s 30-yard run before Loyola quarterback Dan O’Neil scored twice on two 1-yard runs to give the Cubs their sixth win in seven games in the Del Rey League game at Crespi. O’Neil’s second touchdown was set up by Bernard Brown, who returned the second-half kickoff to the Crespi 24. The Cubs also got a 28-yard field goal from Todd Sheets. Loyola is now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league. Crespi, after winning its first four games, is now 4-3 and 0-2.

Riverside Poly 14, Rubidoux 3--The defending Big Five Conference champions could manage only 141 yards of total offense--133 yards coming on the ground--but got a 51-yard touchdown run in the first quarter by Chris Brantley and a 59-yarder by Steve Zaipulu in the fourth for a Citrus Belt League win at Riverside Poly. The Bears, the Times’ No. 4-ranked team, held Rubidoux to only 82 yards in total offense. Riverside Poly is now 7-0 overall and 4-0 in league. Rubidoux is 3-3 and 1-2.

St. Paul 36, Pius X 14--John Scott completed 10 of 21 passes for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Swordsmen over Downey Pius X in an Angelus League game at St. Paul. Teaming with Scott was Carlos Zamora, who rushed for 117 yards in 10 carries. Pius X quarterback Eddie Nevarez completed 12 of 21 passes for 170 yards. St. Paul rebounded from last week’s 17-14 loss to Mater Dei and now is 1-1 in league and 6-1 overall. Pius X is 4-3 and 0-2.

Oxnard 28, Buena 0--Wayne Jones carried 46 times for 197 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead the Yellowjackets to an upset win in the Channel League game at Oxnard High. The loss knocked Buena (5-2, 3-1) out of undisputed first place. Oxnard is now 5-2 and 2-2.

El Rancho 33, Bell Gardens 15--Francisco Barillas carried 13 times for 253 yards and scored twice on runs of 78 yards in the Whitmont League game at Bell Gardens. The Dons got a third touchdown on a 69-yard pass play from Mike Perea to Greg Salcedo. Bell Gardens, which has now lost two straight league games, was led by Leo Moraga, who had 97 yards in 14 carries, and Joel Andujo, who had 98 yards in 11 tries. Javier Fimprez completed 10 of 22 for 112 yards for the losers. El Rancho is now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in league. Bell Gardens is 4-3 and 2-2.

La Mirada 34, Mayfair 8--Kelly Brooks, an all-Southern Section running back last year, had 225 yards and 5 touchdowns in 19 carries in the Suburban League game at Mayfair. In seven games, Brooks has gained 1,208 yards and scored 17 touchdowns. The Matadors improved their record to 6-1 and 2-0. Mayfair is 1-6 and 0-2.
