Twenty Indian inmates are suing Lompoc Federal Prison to allow them to wear their traditional headbands in the prison cafeteria --a practice banned by prison officials. The Indian inmates claim the ban violates their rights to freedom of religion. Prison officials said the rule, which also includes the wearing of sweat suits and shower shoes, is a response to complaints about filthy clothes and greasy hats being worn in the dining room. A hearing on the inmates’ request for a preliminary injunction against the ban will be held Nov. 4 in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
