About 2,800 Union Carbide Corp. employees have agreed to voluntarily leave their jobs under a $70-million severance program created to prevent layoffs and cut costs, a company spokesman said in Danbury, Conn. The company announced in late August that it would try to reduce its white-collar domestic salaried staff by 15%, or 4,000 employees, Tom Failla, a spokesman, said. The company hopes to save $250 million a year beginning in 1986 through the severance program. Union Carbide spent $70 million in incentives to encourage eligible employees to take early retirement, Failla said.
