Two Long Beach brothers who allegedly attacked an umpire with bats during a slow-pitch softball game have been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and battery.
They are Greg Sinsun, 19, and his brother, Benito Sinsun, 20. Each misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
The case was referred to the city prosecutor by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, which said it did not press felony charges because the victim’s injuries were not serious.
The umpire, Hal Smith, 33, of Bellflower, suffered a severely bruised cheekbone, contusions above his right eye and impaired vision in the Oct. 31 incident at Chittick Field in Long Beach.
Smith said the Sinsun brothers hit him with bats after he ejected Greg Sinsun from the game.
