Sign Firm Files Claim Against Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills’ campaign to rid itself of the 31 billboards that line a five-mile stretch of the Ventura Freeway through the city may be a costly one, the City Council has discovered.
National Advertising Co. of Woodland Hills filed a $609,240 claim Wednesday against the city for being required to remove two billboards from a 34-acre construction site.
One of the signs stood in the way of the construction project and had to be removed last month; the other is at the edge of the site. The city had ordered both signs removed as a condition for granting a building permit for the $75-million project.
The billboard company contends that the state Business and Professions Code requires cities to compensate billboard owners when signs are ordered removed. Company officials said they have a 24-year lease on the site.
The City Council planned to forward the claim to the city’s insurance adjuster.
