NIT Big Apple Tournament : Duke Slips Past Lamar, 66-62

HOUSTON — Duke’s David Henderson scored 18 points, and guard Johnny Dawkins added 14 as the Blue Devils beat stubborn Lamar, 66-62, in a first-round game of the NIT Big Apple preseason basketball tournament Thursday night.
It took a pair of free throws by Dawkins with 17 seconds left and two more by Henderson with five seconds remaining to finally subdue the surprising Cardinals.
Alabama Birmingham’s Jerome Mincy and sharpshooter Steve Mitchell had clutch performances in the closing minutes to lead the Blazers to a 71-68 victory over Texas A&M; in the first game.
The Blazers blew a 16-point lead and had to depend on Mincy, who scored 8 of his 16 points in the final 4:41 of the game.
The Blazers will meet the Blue Devils in Sunday’s second round.
Only 1,250 fans attended the opening games of the 16-team field.
