Zambia Police Break Up Protest of Student Fees

LUSAKA, Zambia — Police firing tear gas broke up crowds of university students on Tuesday as they gathered for a protest march over the reintroduction of boarding school fees. No one was hurt.
A spokesman said officers had already used gas and batons Monday night to force students back onto the main campus of the University of Zambia here in the capital. Perhaps coincidentally, the government announced Tuesday that the wholesale price of beer is being raised more than 40%. There were no immediate demonstrations.
