PORTLAND, Conn. — A 14-year-old student opened fire with a semiautomatic rifle in a junior high school Tuesday, killing a custodian and injuring the principal and a secretary, police said.
The student was taken into custody, but authorities did not release his name because of his age. The victim was identified as David L. Bengston, 36, of Portland.
The student roamed the school for more than a half-hour, shooting the three people and briefly taking a hostage before police persuaded him to surrender.
The principal and the secretary were not seriously wounded.
