Bowling Green football Coach Denny Stolz, whose undefeated team plays Fresno State Saturday in the California Bowl at Fresno, was named head coach at San Diego State.
Stolz, 51, replaced Doug Scovil, who was fired last week after leading the Aztecs to a 5-6-1 record. In 1975, Stolz was the head coach at Michigan State when the Spartans were hit with a three-year probation because of NCAA rules violations. He did not coach in 1976, then went to Bowling Green, where his 1985 team was one of just three major college teams to go undefeated with an 11-0 regular-season record.
