Oil Drilling Off the Coast
Did Governor Deukmejian really fall into a trap in siding with the oil companies in opposing the Congressional moratorium on oil drilling off the California coast? I doubt it.
Although the Governor’s siding with the oil lobbyists against our Senators Cranston and Wilson helped lead to the one-vote defeat of the drilling ban, the Governor knew what he was doing, just as he knows the effect of his refusing to budget federal funds for the coastal commission.
Oil companies and coastal developers are major campaign contributors. Let’s see how the Governor is rewarded as he seeks campaign funds for his re-election.
