FINNISH CENSORS BAN ‘AMERICAN’

HELSINKI — Finland’s State Board of Film Censorship has banned the public showing of a Finnish-American film, “Born American,” described by critics here as brutal and anti-Soviet, a board spokeswoman said.
She said the film, directed by Finland’s Renny Harlin, had been banned by unanimous decision of the board “for political reasons and reasons of violence” but would not comment further on the political aspect.
Originally entitled “Arctic Heat,” it tells the story of some young Americans who illegally cross the border from Finland into the Soviet Union and end up in prison camp.
Critics said the film obviously hoped to ride on the worldwide wave of popularity of the violent American “Rambo” films about a Vietnam war veteran.
