ORANGE COUNTY PREP BASKETBALL : Girls’ Roundup : Canyon Edges Santa Ana Valley, 46-45

Angie Nelson made both ends of a one-and-one opportunity late in the game to give Canyon High School a 46-45 victory over Santa Ana Valley Thursday in Century League girls’ basketball play.
Playing at home, the Comanches (2-2, 7-4) trailed, 45-44, after the Falcons’ Tammy Bethune made a layup with 1:10 remaining. Nelson was fouled with 30 seconds left and made both free throws.
Canyon led, 11-10, after one quarter, 24-23, after two and 35-34 after three. Nelson led all scorers with 16 points. Lila Neffa added 11 points for Canyon. Bethune had 13 points and 12 rebounds for Santa Ana Valley (1-3, 6-5).
In other Century League games:
Foothill 64, El Modena 31--Becky Sullivan scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Knights (4-0, 14-1). Stephanie Fleischaker added 10 points. Ten of the 12 Foothill players scored.
In the Angelus League:
Mater Dei 42, St. Joseph 30--Geri Ganiey had 13 points and Hallie Formaneck added 10 points to give Mater Dei (4-0) sole possession of first. Dede Mosman had 12 points for St Joseph (3-1).
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 79, Pacifica 26--Jill Matyuch scored a game-high 37 points to lead the Golden Hawks (5-1, 11-2) to the easy victory at home. Cathy Newvine and Julie Cooper eached added 14 points. Maria Tejeda had 10 for the Mariners, who are 0-6 in league.
Esperanza 77, Kennedy 31--The Aztecs outscored Kennedy, 27-6, in the third quarter to win at Esperanza. Karen Davidson had 20 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocked shots for Esperanza (5-0, 13-3). Sharon Warmus had a game-high 25 points. Ursula Lovely had 12 points for Sonora (0-5).
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 37, Troy 28--Vicki Silva scored 15 points and center Sabrina Welch added 12 to lead the Indians (2-0, 11-4) to the win. Troy is 1-1 in league.
La Habra 48, Sonora 19--Using a full-court press, La Habra opened a 10-0 lead before the host Raiders scored with 30 seconds to go in the first quarter. Robin Seabrook had 14 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals for La Habra (2-0, 13-4). Kim Ensing had eight points to lead Sonora (0-2).
Sunny Hills 44, Buena Park 39--Keisha Dean and Jennifer Moulten each had eight points to lead the Lancers (1-1) to the win. Marcy Cromwell had 12 points for Buena Park (0-2).
In the Garden Grove League:
Los Amigos 46, Santiago 41--Kelly Grand had 19 points and Martha Zazuepa added 13 to lead the Lobos (3-0, 6-4). Santiago’s Shannon Alexander led her team with 18 points.
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 52, Southern California Christian 36--Jill Trenchel scored 21 points to lead the Lancers (2-3, 6-6) to the win at SCC. Debbie Dunigan scored 16 points to lead the Flames (1-4, 1-6).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 81, Western 19--Kristen McPhee had 25 points and Katie Swain added 15 to lead the Wildcats (2-0, 14-2). Eleven of 12 Brea players scored. Western’s Melanie Williams, who averages 23 points per game, had two against Brea. Western is 0-2 in league.
Magnolia 52, Savanna 50--Michelle Carter made an off-balance eight-foot jump shot with two seconds left to give the Sentinels (2-0, 10-5) the win. Carter had 23 points and 15 rebounds.
Venetta Dorlis had 14 points for Savanna (1-1, 8-9).
Valencia 78, Anaheim 27--Steffi Strauss scored 22 points and Ronette McWeeney added 16 to lead the Tigers (1-1, 10-4) to this win at home. Lisa Pool had 14 points for the Colonists (0-2, 0-13).
In the Sea View League:
Corona del Mar 61, Woodbridge 50--K.C. Jones had 25 points and 6 rebounds for the Sea Kings (5-0). Michele Willard added 17 points and 17 rebounds. Jill Millat and Lisa Mahony scored 12 points apiece for the Warriors (4-1).
Costa Mesa 48, University 28--Guard Stephanie Swanson had 21 points and Suzanne Cowley added 14 for the Mustangs (3-2, 8-7). Angie Hubner had 12 points for University (0-5, 2-10).
In the South Coast League:
El Toro 66, Dana Hills 24--Forward Andrea Young had 21 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Chargers (4-0, 11-5) to the win at home.
San Clemente 40, Trabuco Hills 18--Karen Ptolemy scored 10 points and had 9 rebounds to lead the Tritons (5-6) past the Mustangs at Trabuco Hills. The Mustangs didn’t score in the third period.
Irvine 44, Capistrano Valley 37--Shelly Moceri scored 11 points and Cindy Edwards added 9 to lead the Vaqueros (3-1, 8-6) at at home. Caylin Combs had 24 points for Capistrano Valley (2-2).
In the Sunset League:
Fountain Valley 58, Westminster 50--Center Jackie Cook scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Barons (3-0, 16-3) past the Lions at Fountain Valley. Kerri Clower added 10 points and 6 assists for Fountain Valley. Shannon Bates scored 17 to lead Westminster (1-2, 8-5).
Ocean View 53, Marina 43--Trina Vlachos scored 20 points and Dana Douty had 11 assists to lead the Seahawks (2-1, 11-6) to the win. Temre Kuester had 11 points for Marina (0-3, 10-7).
Edison 67, Huntington Beach 41--Denise Ogburn scored 19 points and Kristin Wilson had 10 points as the Chargers improved to 14-3 overall and 2-1 in league. The Oilers were led by Stefanie Pemper with 14 points and Tami Chick with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
