City Firefighters Sporting Centennial Badge
- Share via
Los Angeles City firefighters have begun sporting a new badge marking the 100th anniversary of the department’s founding on Feb. 1, 1886.
Designed in the shape of a Victorian-era shield, the badge displays a hand-pump fire engine, crossed axes, the city seal, a centennial stripe and each firefighter or paramedic’s rank and serial number.
Capt. Dean Lange designed the badge for the department, and the $51,000 financing came from a special City Council action signed by Mayor Tom Bradley.
The badges will be authorized for wear by department members until the end of January, 1987, a department spokesman said.
Division Chief Peter Lucarelli said the city will recover all funds by selling the badges to fire and paramedic personnel, and then return the money to the city.
