Aviation Safety Record Set by Air Force in 1985

WASHINGTON — The Air Force said Friday that it set a peacetime aviation safety record in 1985.
Major Air Force accidents during the year killed 78 people, including 38 pilots, but the accident rate fell to 1.49 per 100,000 flying hours--a 14% decrease from the previous record of 1.73 accidents per 100,000 hours set in 1983. Air Force planes flew 3.5 million hours in 1985.
