Navratilova Wins; Mandlikova Withdraws

WORCESTER, Mass. — Top-seeded Martina Navratilova beat Carling Bassett of Canada, 6-0, 6-3, in a $250,000 women’s tennis tournament for her 28th straight victory Friday night. But her top rival, Hana Mandlikova, abruptly quit while losing, 6-3, 3-1, to another Canadian, Helen Kelesi.

“My arm has been sore for three months,” Mandlikova said. “I had not played since the Australian Open. Usually, rest helps it. But my game is my serve, and you can’t serve if you can’t raise your arm.”

Third-seeded Pam Shriver defeated Svetlana Parkhomenko of the Soviet Union, 6-1, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch beat Wendy Turnbull, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, to move into the quarterfinals on the strength of that one victory. Earlier, she drew a first-round bye and then won her scheduled second-round match by default.
