Ex-Argentine Aide Appeals Extradition

MIAMI — A former Argentine Cabinet minister will appeal a judge’s ruling that he could be extradited to his homeland for trial on charges of plotting political murders and looting the treasury, his attorney said.
Former Social Welfare Minister Jose Lopez Rega, 69, often called the power behind the 1970s governments of Juan and Isabel Peron, lost his initial battle last week when U.S. Magistrate Samuel Smargon rejected his contention that he was being sought by the Argentine government for political reasons.
The U.S. State Department must make the final decision on extradition.
