Local letter writers are trying to give Fresno State University an edge in an effort to become the first campus in the California State University system to offer doctorates. State higher education officials said they have been receiving numerous letters promoting creation of a doctoral program at Fresno State. “We’re getting letters from nowhere else in the state --just the Fresno area,” said Lee Kerschner, executive director of the Commission for the Review of the Master Plan for Higher Education. Later this year, that commission will consider whether to let some of the four-year California State University campuses offer doctorates.
