Special Mass Will Honor 3 Fathers
A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in honor of the Columban Fathers, who have served the Blessed Sacrament Parish since its beginning in a barn on the corner of Olive and Main streets in Westminster. The church is located at 14072 Olive St., Westminster.
In 1942, three Columban Fathers were assigned to minister to an area of 65 square miles by then-Bishop John J. Cantwell after the priests serving mission communities in the county were called into service during World War II. Fathers John McFadden, Robert Ross and Robert Cullen celebrated their first Mass in Ignacio Cervantes’ barn and later moved to a scout cabin in Sigler Park.
As the population in the area increased, new parishes were formed, in whole and in parts, to serve communities in Huntington Beach, Stanton, Garden Grove and Los Alamitos.
