Cardinal Ends Visit to Lebanon, Couldn’t Get Notes to Hostages

BEIRUT — Cardinal John J. O’Connor of New York wound up a three-day visit to Lebanon today, saying he had failed to deliver messages to five American hostages from their families in the United States.
“I made many queries about the hostages, but I was unable to perform my mission of delivering the messages I carried for them from their families in the U.S.,” O’Connor told a news conference.
He spoke at the Maronite Catholic Cathedral of Bikirki shortly before taking off for Rome to brief Vatican officials.
The Roman Catholic prelate said he will not go to Damascus as he had planned because he was not invited by Syria.
