A Vietnamese interpreter for state and federal courts in San Diego was indicted Wednesday on felony charges that he tried to bribe an immigration examiner to illegally process naturalization applications for four Vietnamese immigrants.
The federal indictment says Tuan Anh Nguyen gave the examiner $1,750 and promised her an additional $750 to approve the immigrants’ naturalization papers. The examiner provided information on the alleged bribe attempts to federal investigators, according to U.S. Atty. Peter K. Nunez.
Nguyen is charged with three counts of bribery and four counts of unlawful procurement of naturalization. Each bribery charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. The immigration charges each carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
