LOMA LINDA, Calif. — Three-year-old “Baby Nicky” was in critical but stable condition today at Loma Linda University Medical Center after undergoing his second heart transplant in two days after the first organ quickly began to fail.
Nicky Carrizales of San Antonio went into surgery about midnight to receive the heart of a 6-year-old Colorado boy who was fatally shot by a playmate. “At 1:05 a.m. the heart was in place, began to beat and looked good,” said Anita Rockwell, spokeswoman for the hospital.
