LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Murray P. Haydon, kept alive for 488 days after becoming the world’s third recipient of a permanent artificial heart, was remembered at his funeral Saturday as a man with a deep love of life.
The private funeral was held less than a mile from his home in the suburb of St. Matthews, which he visited only twice while dependent on the mechanical pump.
The retired assembly line worker and barber died Thursday at Humana Hospital Audubon, where he underwent the implant surgery.
