The Nation : Poor to Get Liberty Taxes

The governors of New Jersey and New York are expected to sign a “memorandum of understanding” today designating that sales tax revenues from ventures on Liberty and Ellis islands go to aid the two states’ homeless and hungry, officials said in Trenton, N.J. The memo, awaiting signatures from New Jersey Gov. Thomas H. Kean and New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, will settle a longstanding feud over which state should get revenues from the historic islands and how the money should be spent, a spokesman for Kean said.
