Jack Kaiser, St. John’s University’s athletic director, announced that two Redmen basketball players “made an inadvertent mistake” in borrowing a credit card from a booster to make telephone calls from an airplane.
Kaiser said all of St. John’s governing bodies--the NCAA, Big East Conference and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Assn.--have been notified and “they will determine if there was any violation.”
In confirming a story in Friday’s New York Daily News, Kaiser said the players, All-American Walter Berry and Shelton Jones, had borrowed the credit car from attorney Joe Giaimo, while the team was on a March 17 return flight from California after the Redmen lost to Auburn in the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
